The suspension of Russia and Belarus by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stems from the geopolitical turmoil that erupted in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. The conflict resulted in widespread condemnation and a series of punitive measures from the international community, including the sporting world. In response to the invasion, the IOC took the decisive step of suspending both Russia and Belarus from participating under their national flags and colors.
